Duo Expo REFLECTION Noon Passama – Jiro Kamata at GALERIE BEYOND
Noon Passama
A set of indefinite basic actions which bring about shapes that are somewhere between the classic
and the unfamiliar. An action is repeated over and over in sculpted models until there is one that feels
right. The sculpting process is the passing of stages in which a malleable material becomes solidified.
It reflects in the contrast between the sleek hard tactility and the soft fluid-like appearance of the
jewellery. In many pieces, the framework is a straightforward format like a complete circle or one link
connecting to the next. A series of necklaces, rings and earrings in palladium and rhodium plated
sterling silver, hand sculpted and casted.
Jiro Kamata
After his Holon series Jiro was interested to create his own lens shape and started to work together
with a camera lens company. At the same time he was looking for the highest material for camera
lenses and the answer was sapphire glass, the clearest material ever. His Oculus series of rings and
earrings are made with sapphire glass lenses and silver or 18K gold. Behind the lenses there is a
coating with PVD or 24K gold.
Through the coating and the hemisphere shape, the lens creates a small eye in the middle which is
named Oculus. This body of work is not only related with his main theme “light and reflection” but also
a macro cosmos and micro cosmos on your finger or in your ear.

LECTURE WITH Urmas Lüüs
Performative peripheries / body and object / powered by material culture
Urmas Lüüs is an interdisciplinary Estonian artist who combines craft, photography, video, performance, sculpture, sound and text into one big breathing installative organism. Mostly working in his studio at the Old Town of Tallinn.
While studying blacksmithing and jewellery at the Estonian Academy of Arts, he started to hang around with the students from Performing Arts Department. Like most great collaborations that start with common parties and shared bottles of beer, he became interested in connecting material culture and craft with contemporary theatre and performing arts. For last 10 years he has been wondering around at gray zones between theatre and visual arts.
Urmas Lüüs is a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts. He has given lectures in the Department of Performing Arts at TU Viljandi Academy of Culture in Estonia, HDK Steneby College of Gothenburg University in Sweden, Hiko Mizuno College of Jewellery in Japan, Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Netherlands, Silpakorn University in Thailand, Chinese Academy of Arts in China, Oslo National Academy of the Arts in Norway. He is writing articles and reviews for different cultural newspapers and magazines.
Lecture will have place at Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in “Grote Aula” at Keyserstraat 14 – 2000 Antwerpen at 6.30pm.
No reservation needed.
